Join us this Friday, April 26th at 1pm to watch our NEW internship video by Jeff, Whitney and Valerie in the CDC! Reminder: Doodle polls for Finals Week and Fall 2013 work availability will close on Wednesday, April 24th. Common Question Communications Consortium employer contact info is now available at the front desk! Please ask the students to write down the employer(s) contact info. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- All seniors and grad students will be coming in to request Post-Grad Services. This basically means that they will receive job opportunities every Friday via JobOps. JobOps will replace CDCNews after they graduate. They will typically receive their first JobOps email a week or two after graduation. What to do when a student comes by for Post-Grad Services Let them know they will need to complete a short survey first. Then log them into an iMac. We also have a laptop on the coffee table as a back up. On the desktop, there will be a shortcut to the survey located at the top right corner. Just double click to open it. The survey will take about 5 minutes or so depending on how detailed their answers are. Before they leave, give them this: and explain that they can contact us anytime for any career-related needs (résumé/CL reviews, job hunting advice etc.)
FYI: Post-grad services will continue until graduation. Do you have a common question you're unsure of answering? Email it to me at [email protected] It's Communications Consortium week! Kelly, Bridget and I will be in and out (mostly out) of the office Monday-Wednesday. You will most likely find us running around in Schine :). Since it will be a slow week in the office, I'd like to diverge from my normal blog post structure to share more helpful tips on customer service because I'm sure you'll encounter a student (or alum!) who will request to meet with us during our busiest week of the year. Here are my helpful suggestions on what to say (adapt these to your situations as you see fit of course):
FYI Only: Even when the Communications Consortium ends on Wednesday, it's not really over for us.We need Thursday and Friday to recuperate as we prepare thank you notes to send to employers, return unused employer swag, email employer invoices while getting back into the swing of things at the office. Not to mention all the emails we need to read and reply to! With all that being said, don't be surprised if a counselor decides to take Friday off or leave early! I hope this information helps you understand what goes on behind the scenes...what most students don't get to see. Kelly will be doing Quick Counsel this week! Post-Grad Services Facts All seniors and grad students will be coming in to request Post-Grad Services starting Thursday, April 17th. Career Fair Helpers I will email you with details you need to know for the event on Wednesday. Fall and Finals Week Work Schedule I will be sending a Doodle poll the week of April 22nd for the Fall and Finals Week work shifts! Common Question Many students will be coming in to schedule appointments this week or next.
Due to the Communications Consortium, students will need to schedule appointments for the week of April 22nd. Please refrain from sending Appointment Request emails unless it's an urgent need (such as how to respond to a job offer with a deadline this week...basically any appointment request that couldn't be scheduled in advanced). Requests that could be planned in advanced such as a resume/CL review, how to find an internship are not urgent. Q: " I didn't apply for any of the Communication Consortium positions. May I still go to the Career Fair?" A: "Yes! No need to register. We recommend bringing copies of your résumé and/or just to meet employers and network." (Feel free to give them a copy of our DO ad. Copies will be at the front desk. Do you have a common question you're unsure of answering? Email it to me at [email protected] Happy April everyone! Just 5 more weeks left of the semester....several important updates here so let me know if you have questions. Please respond to my requests below via email this week. Thanks! April 8, 22, and 29 CDC Specialist Update Thank you again for taking the time to write evaluations for each candidate. Your comments were quite entertaining :). I will be reviewing everyone's application and interview evaluations again to make my final picks. FYI only: A few candidates have been contacted regarding their availability this semester. If they can work during the shifts that I need to fill, they will start this semester if they accept our offer. I will email everyone with an update before I email offers. All candidates will receive a status update after Wednesday and will receive feedback on their applications *If a candidate asks about their status, let them know they can contact us after this week if they don't hear from us. Common QuestionQ: "I'm a senior (or grad student!) and I'm looking for a job. Do you guys have a job database that I could have access to?"
A: "We only have an internship database available in our office however, when you sign up for post-grad services by completing a short survey you will be added to our JobOps listserv and receive job postings every Friday after graduation. This will replace CDCNews. This survey will be available the week of April 18th in our office."* *This is also a great opportunity to ask them if they completed the Job Hunt Marathon! Things to remember: -Our Post-grad services/survey is offered at the end of each semester. -Students must complete the survey in our office on one of our iMacs so you will need to log them in. -The survey is super simple. Students are asked to elaborate on their experience at Newhouse. -After they complete the post-grad survey, please give the student a Making it a Reality book and CDC magnet. -Inform each graduating student that the CDC is a lifelong service and they can contact us to schedule an appointment whenever they need help with anything career-related. -If a student cannot take the survey, have them sign up for JobOps on our website instead. -All graduating students will be rolled over from CDCNews to JobOps in the summer.
