I'm still looking for more entries for the coffee sleeve design this week. You're welcome to submit more designs if you want. If you work Friday, please dress more business casual. We expect alumni and employers to pass through our office. ProDevo Hour Now that internship profiles are out of the way (for now :) )...it's time to work on your professional development goals. Please email me a short bulleted list of your goals this semester. An example of a goal would be to complete your LinkedIn profile or update your résumé. Anything career related. I'd also like you to list how you would like support with your goals even if it's just keeping you accountable for them. The sooner you send me this, the sooner you can start using your 1 hour! Oh and DON'T FORGET...Free Sushi Dinner this Friday! 5 pm @ Bleu Monkey! Common Question Q: [Senior/Grad student walks in...] "I'd like to schedule an appointment. I had a few questions about how to search for a job." FYI: S/he did not take the job hunt. A: "Well before you schedule an appointment, our counselors would like you to take the Job Hunt Marathon first to teach you the basics of finding a job and how to network effectively. That will help you make the best use of your time during your appointment. Effective today: Students can only schedule job search appointments after completing the JHM Do you have a common question you're unsure of answering? Email it to me at [email protected] LinkedIn Challenge Facts What is it? The LinkedIn Challenge is an initiative to increase traffic and engagement on the CDCNewhouse Internship Group and help students improve their profiles. When will it start? The challenge is six weeks and it officially starts on Monday, October 7th. What will students be doing? Each week, students will have to complete a challenge for points that will be posted on the LinkedIn group and some of them require coming into the office! How will I know the challenge of the week? Whitney will create and display a handout at the front desk with the details of the challenge and the points students may earn if they complete it. Note: Some challenges will not require students to visit the CDC. What are the weekly challenges? A hard copy of the weekly challenges will be posted at the front desk. How can I help? Spread the word! This challenge is great for any student looking to improve their LinkedIn profile. Also, please list the students’ name and the points they receive after they complete a challenge on our LinkedIn Challenge Points spreadsheet in Google Drive. If you have any questions, please email Whitney at [email protected]. Resource of the Week CDCNewhouse YouTube Channel! Link:
www.youtube.com/cdcnewhouse Strategist: Losa :) YouTube Channel Statistics: - approx. 63 videos (not including the unlisted ones) The videos are now organized so that students can find the information they're looking for. Here are some of the updates: - Communications Career Fair playlists, which include video interviews of both employers and students at the event. - An Internship Feedback playlist, where students who have had internships talk about their experience. - A Seminar Feedback playlist, where students give feedback on our very own CDC seminars :) - An Inspiration playlist. Inspirational videos to help motivate students not to give up! Examples include TedTalks, Kid President and more. We are also working on an Internship Advice playlist and hoping to get more Seminar Feedback/Internship Highlight videos added to the list. How you can help spread the word: It'd be great to spread the word about the channel by highlighting our playlists depending on the student's interest in person or via social media.

I hope you all had a great weekend. Kelly returns on Wednesday and there's still time to sign her door if you need to! Now, I have a challenge for you... Can you help us get the New Internships folder down to zero? (If you had internships in your folder, I reviewed them all so you can start organizing them in the binders.) Once we accomplish this, you'll get to use one hour of your work each week until the semester ends to work on your professional development goals. Let me know if you have any questions, Judith Compliments "Props to Judith on Kelly's awesome door decoration! Love the tacos :)."-Tonya "Losa and Valerie. Awesome job on the office decor. Nice touch!"-Tonya Give someone a compliment today here to be featured next week on The Blog! A request A student arrived to her résumé appointment last week and mentioned that she didn't know she had to update her materials after watching the video. Please remember to tell students that they need to update their résumé and cover letter after watching the video. Please explain that this will help them make the most of their appointment. Quick Tip A few student org reps have been stopping by to drop off event flyers.... Please post them on our Up themed bulletin board above the front counter for all to see. Common Question Q: "I'm going abroad next semester and I'd like to find an internship. Do you have any international internships in your database?"
Do you have a common question you're unsure of answering? Email it to me at [email protected] Resource of the Week CDCNewhouse Internship Group on LinkedIn Group purpose: To help Newhouse students connect and network with their peers about internships and advice while they practice using LinkedIn. Quick Facts: -It's free to join. -We have over 400 members to date -We launched it in the Fall 2012 -Only Newhouse students are allowed to join Why are employers not allowed to join? We don't want students contacting them to ask for internships or jobs. We want to teach them how to properly network first! Current Features: Top Discussion Thread Topics: Weekly Employer Q +A - Share your internship experience After a student shares his/her internship experience, s/he will be featured in our internship highlights slideshow. Share Advice Articles Promote upcoming employer visits, internship fairs or recruiting events. Seminars Tuesday- Basic Cover Letter Writing Thursday- Finding an Internship Bridget is doing Quick Counsel. Upcoming event$ Career Day, Saturday, October 26, 2013 We need 2 specialists to work our check in table from 8:45 am-12 pm or so. Please email to let me know if you would like to earn extra money by working this event! I will email you details closer to the date. Microsoft Outlook Update & Reminder I added a seminar reminder template for the Art of Networking and also alphabetized the reminders by seminar in that template. Please remember to check the appointment request folder for new emails. We have an updated Fall 2013 Work Schedule (Elaina and Tonya adjusted their Friday shifts). View it here. Quick Tip Students are allowed to borrow our industry directories to scan pages in the Newhouse scanning bays in N1 to save money from making copies. Common Question Q: [A student comes in...] "I dropped off my résumé (or cover letter, networking email etc.) for the drop box. Is it ready yet?" Side note: Students can only submit one item for drop box review at a time. That way we don't get stuck with mulitiple copies of the same résumé or cover letter with a few sentences reworded. If we receive multiple copies from the same person, we will only review one. A: FYI: Whatever you do, DO NOT check, look or even touch the drop box envelope (I replaced the folder so students can't see what's inside). The student's materials may still be in there because we've been swamped with other priorities. We wouldn't tell them that of course. Instead, say, "Our counselors may still be working on it." Instead, here are some helpful questions to ask: "When did you drop it off?" Generally, it takes us 2 business days to review dropbox items. Sometimes longer if we have a seminar/event/full appointment hours going on during the week. "Do you see it posted on the wall (point to it) with your name on it?" If it's not on our wall and the student dropped it off more than 2 business days ago, please do the following 3 things: 1) Get the student's name. 2) Check with the counselors to see if they have it. -If they do, they will let you know when it will be ready to pick up and let the student know. -If they don't... 2) Say something like: "I'm sorry that it's not ready yet. I can touch base with our counselors to check the status of it. What's your name and email so I can follow up with you?" 3) AFTER the student leaves... Check the drop box folder if it's in there. If it is, see if one of the counselors can review it ASAP and explain that the student dropped it off a few days ago etc. Do you have a common question you're unsure of answering? Email it to me at [email protected] Resource of the Week Last week, Sam helped change the black panel to inform students about different Newhouse student orgs to get involved in. This is another great option to gain hands-on experience to build your résumé. She also created a handout listing all the Newhouse student orgs and a direct link (www.bit.ly/suorgs) for the full list. Unlike some internships, joining a student org is free and you don't have to worry about paying for credit or room/board since it's on campus. Walk over and check it out! Didn't she do a fantastic job??? :) Training Webinar Feedback Summary Thanks for sharing your feedback with me. I really appreciate it! Here are some highlights:
Good Suggestions to consider in the future:
-Doing a Fall webinar training and an in person Spring training -Take screenshots of webinar info for your records if you want to reference late. -Incorporate polls to see if attendees understand concepts. Questions for you 1) If you preferred a shorter training session, how do you define short? 2) Since everyone has different learning styles, what do you think about watching a pre-recorded webinar with videos and completing a worksheet based on it? Then we would meet in the CDC as a group to apply the concepts and answer any questions. The in person training would last about an hour. Would this be helpful? Please take a moment to answer these questions today by completing this form here. Hard to believe, but we're 3 weeks in! Keep the momentum going. Lots of helpful info here to help you do that. Let me know if you have any questions. Read on to find out who earned the most CARE tickets... Judith :) Compliment "To Losa & Shy: Thanks for recording video and tweeting at the Communications Internship Fair. We appreciate all your hard work!" - Judith "Tonya, nice work on our new bulletin board!"-Judith Give someone a compliment today here to be featured next week on The Blog! It will be first come, first served. Kelly's Wedding: 5 Days! I will be out on Tuesday. Communications Internship Fair 2013 Employer Contact Info is posted on the dry erase board above the front counter! Quick Tip Common Question Q: "Is a counselor available? I just have a quick question." A: Using CARE, you can respond in the nicest way possible: Connect: "Sure, I can check for you, but... Ask: ...what's your quick question about? Perhaps I can help answer it for you." Sometimes students will be really short with you and give one word answers, so this is when you need to ask specific questions if they mention the following subjects: Résumé/cover letter/networking email/LinkedIn profile "Were you looking to receive feedback?" = offer an appointment/dropbox/ Quick Counsel (ask if they meet our prerequisites) OR offer handouts/videos Event related "Were you looking for more general details like what it's about, the time or location?" = refer to flyer Newhouse Network/Job Search 1) "Were you interested in how to join the NN?" = Job Hunt Marathon, offer to help them sign up and give them a seminar schedule 2) "Were you having an issue with your NN account?" = info card 3) "Did you complete the Job Hunt Marathon? This is a prerequisite to schedule an appointment about your job search..." = If no, follow response to question #1. If yes, help them schedule an appointment If an alumni/employer calls to speak to us (it's usually to post a job for the first time) "Sure, were you looking to post a job or internship with us?" = If yes, let them know you can help them with that by emailing them a link to our online form. If not, follow the tips for great phone etiquette here to collect the information you need before asking a counselor to take the call. Recommend: Depending on the subject, you may need to ask a counselor for help. *Always refer a student to a counselor for questions related to salary, how to respond to an employer/alumni email and anything that can't be answered with general knowledge and is time sensitive. In most cases, the student is looking to do the following: -schedule an appointment -ask a general question about an upcoming event -how to sign up for a seminar -to review their résumé/cover letter/networking email/LinkedIn profile = these requests are better by appointment, dropbox or Quick Counsel -Follow up on an email s/he sent (in which case, ask them when they emailed us and then inform the counselor that the student stopped by to follow up on an email s/he sent on _________." What you could say if a quick question requires an appt : "Our counselors prefer that you schedule an appointment for that kind of question. The earliest appointment we have available is..." If they insist on speaking to a counselor, you could say: "I can see if they're available, but they usually prefer that you schedule an appointment for questions like that." If the counselor isn't available... "She's currently in the middle of something (or out of the office), here's her business card. You can email her instead and she'll get back to you as soon as possible." Encourage: If there isn't an appointment slot available... Apologize and offer other available resources (ie. handouts) or encourage them to visit Center for Career Services' drop-in hours in 235 Schine (give info card). Do you have a common question you're unsure of answering? Email it to me at [email protected] Resource of the Week In honor of our first Finding an Internship and Job Hunt Marathon this semester, check out our Seminar Prep page here for how to videos and a picture on the following: -How to print a seminar sign-up sheet -How to prep for the Job Hunt Marathon Part 1 and 2 -How to prep for the Finding an Internship seminar And the CARE Raffle Prize goes to.... The 2nd runner up was Tonya (16) and the 3rd runner up was Sam (14) . Overall, I'm proud of everyone for doing an excellent job. Whatever "it" is for you: starting that blog, practicing your graphic design skills or just getting organized (btw these are all real examples from people who work here :) ), I hope this quote inspires you to just do "it." Don't get so caught up in the details that you get stuck in analysis paralysis. #Aintnobodygottime for regrets! Remember dreams only work when you do. That being said, I hope you had a relaxing Labor Day weekend. Now don't you wish you could redo the weekend to get started on "it"? =P Why not start with baby steps today? This week, learn simple & easy tips for great phone etiquette based on my confessions of being a former call center rep. This visual will be posted above the front desk phone for reference. Common Question Sad to say, but we had a horrible NH ambassador tour guide stop by our office last week. It was so bad that we have a wanted sign (thanks to Losa): Q: "What should I say if a Newhouse Ambassador asks me to speak about the CDC while they're on tour?" A: Using CARE, you can give a great overview of the CDC: Connect: "Hi everyone, my name is _________ and I'm a CDC Specialist majoring in ____." Ask: "How's everyone doing?" (before the awkward silence fills in say) "I hope you're enjoying your tour so far.."* *This part of CARE isn't necessary, but I just wanted to try and make it work :). Recommend: "So at the CDC, we recommend students to take advantage of our..." -Internship database, which has over 3,900 communications internships. -Newhouse Network, online alumni database with over 3,000 members. -Free coffee for students in our Sip 'n' Study -Students can schedule an appointment to get feedback on their résumé and cover letter, get networking or job search advice, etc." -We also offer seminars during the semester to teach students how to create an effective résumé and cover letter, how to find an internship, how to search for a job and how to network -student employment opportunities (and feel free to mention how much you loooooove working at the CDC ;) ) Encourage: "Please feel free to take a CDC Factsheet if you haven't already.
