Communications Internship Fair 2013 Employer Contact Info is posted on the dry erase board above the front counter! Quick Tip Common Question Q: "Is a counselor available? I just have a quick question." A: Using CARE, you can respond in the nicest way possible: Connect: "Sure, I can check for you, but... Ask: ...what's your quick question about? Perhaps I can help answer it for you." Sometimes students will be really short with you and give one word answers, so this is when you need to ask specific questions if they mention the following subjects: Résumé/cover letter/networking email/LinkedIn profile "Were you looking to receive feedback?" = offer an appointment/dropbox/ Quick Counsel (ask if they meet our prerequisites) OR offer handouts/videos Event related "Were you looking for more general details like what it's about, the time or location?" = refer to flyer Newhouse Network/Job Search 1) "Were you interested in how to join the NN?" = Job Hunt Marathon, offer to help them sign up and give them a seminar schedule 2) "Were you having an issue with your NN account?" = info card 3) "Did you complete the Job Hunt Marathon? This is a prerequisite to schedule an appointment about your job search..." = If no, follow response to question #1. If yes, help them schedule an appointment If an alumni/employer calls to speak to us (it's usually to post a job for the first time) "Sure, were you looking to post a job or internship with us?" = If yes, let them know you can help them with that by emailing them a link to our online form. If not, follow the tips for great phone etiquette here to collect the information you need before asking a counselor to take the call. Recommend: Depending on the subject, you may need to ask a counselor for help. *Always refer a student to a counselor for questions related to salary, how to respond to an employer/alumni email and anything that can't be answered with general knowledge and is time sensitive. In most cases, the student is looking to do the following: -schedule an appointment -ask a general question about an upcoming event -how to sign up for a seminar -to review their résumé/cover letter/networking email/LinkedIn profile = these requests are better by appointment, dropbox or Quick Counsel -Follow up on an email s/he sent (in which case, ask them when they emailed us and then inform the counselor that the student stopped by to follow up on an email s/he sent on _________." What you could say if a quick question requires an appt : "Our counselors prefer that you schedule an appointment for that kind of question. The earliest appointment we have available is..." If they insist on speaking to a counselor, you could say: "I can see if they're available, but they usually prefer that you schedule an appointment for questions like that." If the counselor isn't available... "She's currently in the middle of something (or out of the office), here's her business card. You can email her instead and she'll get back to you as soon as possible." Encourage: If there isn't an appointment slot available... Apologize and offer other available resources (ie. handouts) or encourage them to visit Center for Career Services' drop-in hours in 235 Schine (give info card).
