Pop Quiz!!! When you see this post, explain to me what you would do in this scenario:
An alumna TRF major from 2013 calls and would like to set-up an appointment. Since her internship ended last fall, she decided that radio may not be her thing. She would like to know the steps she should take towards getting a job at a news station in Boston. You wisely ask her if she has taken the Job Hunt Marathon while she was a student at Newhouse. She has not and you make a note of it for Bridget on her phone appointment window. You have a closing shift and you are sending out appointment reminders. You come to the TRF alumna. What are your next steps? ***Ask about our appointment cards and missed appointment email***

CDCers, Just checking in to make sure you all take the time to read these posts. They may not always be exciting, but it's information I have to put out. Would you be able to pass a quiz?!? I also have a quick post today... I'm sure you are all aware that the Mac computers have a mind of their own lately and I am working on getting them cleaned up and updated. Until then, you can help by not letting students print off their resume and cover letters. We are not a computer lab and the Macs are packed with student saved materials. So when someone asks the answer is... Just kidding... Be nice about it!
This semester was going so smoothly until...
Closing shifts are forgetting to send out appointment/seminar reminders!!! We had 4 no shows yesterday morning during Bridget's appointment hours. Two problems with that. 1.) This effects Bridget's work day. 2.) Appointment hours to students are few and far between. I am currently looking into appointment reminder cards and hopefully we can fit them into our budget. For now make sure you follow your shift schedule break down when you close. It's there for you!!! -Brittany CDCers,
I am happy to announce that we have hired a new CDC student staff member. Many of you already know her as she was recommended by several of you. Charlotte Balogh will be starting here Monday afternoon. For those of you that do not know Charlotte yet, she is a sophomore TRF major and is a very active student here at SU. She is a currently a member of Phi Sigma Pi and is a co-executive producer at OTN. I think she's going to make an awesome addition to our team and I believe she will catch on quick. Now on to the boring stuff... :-( Some of you receive emails or have students pop in the office and say, "I took the Job Hunt last semester and I haven't received my username and password to The Network yet." Chances are they did and they actually deleted it because they did not recognize the sender. The email comes from The Tina Press & David Rubin Career Development Center. (For those of you that have taken the JHM, Bridget and Kelly show a sample of the email in a slide during the presentation.) Now our student staff is able to search for the students that may have this problem. First, verify that the student has attended the seminar, by looking for their name on the sign-in roster. This can be found in the Common Folder. Scroll down to Seminars > Attendance > Job Hunt Marathon. The roster is organized by the date of the seminar and then student's last name. If the student was in attendance that day, then you can sign-on to Versation using this link: http://partners.versation.com/syracuse/backroom/index.php I will then give you the username and password for log-in. Keep in mind that if the student was late or had left the seminar early, their attendance was not recorded. Once you are signed on to Versation, click on User Data. Select Students and you can actually leave All Years. Below All Years there is a box with show unverified students next to it. Be sure to select that box or the student will not show up. If the student's name appears, click on it. His or hers user data will appear along with the username and password. Copy and paste that to the student. If the student's name does not appear, let me know. I also want to say THANK YOU to you guys. I received everyone's timesheet on time. Keep it up! Happy Friday, Brittany Welcome back CDCers, I hope everyone had a relaxing break and are ready to take Newhouse by storm this semester. This post is going to be about pretty lame (but very important) CDC stuff. First, I want everyone to get into the habit of checking their folders at the beginning of their shift. In some folders there are internships that have been sitting for 2 weeks. Let's stay on top of them. When you have completed your internships for the day, please hand in your folder. It's the easiest way to tell me your internships and extra projects are ready to be reviewed and I don't get confused with who did what nor do I catch you mid-project or internship, which has happened this semester. A little change to our closing shifts... Brian has asked me to just leave the Mac computers up and running. They actually use less energy by going into sleep mode than to be turned off and on daily. One less thing everyone has to do! Timesheets... Everyone received my email about timesheets last week. I need to be stern about the weekly deadline. When I'm sending in timesheets and then have to resend stragglers throughout the day, it doesn't look too professional for the CDC. So if you need to send me them at the end of your shift please do so. Lastly, we are looking for a new CDC Staff member to pick-up time gaps in the schedule. I will let you know very soon with who we are hiring. In Tonya Bauer fashion and in spirit of basketball season... Have an awesome Wednesday! Hi all, So I posted the LinkedIn Challenge a little late so I'm extending it through Wednesday. If anyone brings in food items make sure to add them to the excel sheet! Thanks and have a wonderful Thanksgiving! Hi y'all,
We only have one more week of the LinkedIn challenge left! Woah! Here is this week's challenge: "Do you have a friend that still doesn’t have a LinkedIn? Tell them about the benefits of having a LinkedIn and suggest or help them set up a profile. Afterwards, post the name of the friend you’ve helped get LinkedIn! If they already have one...help them improve their profile with tips you've learned through the LinkedIn challenge. Earn 6 points! Don’t forget to have them join the CDCNewhouse Internship group if they are in Newhouse! **BONUS: Newhouse & the CDC are holding its annual food drive. You can get one point for every can/non-perishable good you bring into the CDC up to five points! Remember the LinkedIn Challenge ends Nov.15." Again, this requires all your help. If someone comes in with donated goods, please politely ask them if they are participating in the LinkedIn challenge and immediately award their points on the google doc under "Bonus." They get one point for every item. Also remember all challenges are still active so keep an eye on LinkedIn summaries in the drop box. Thanks again for all your help through these challenges! Tonya. Hey y'all,
We are almost there! The LinkedIn Challenge is in the final stretch. Thank you for all your help! Keep up the amazing work! This week's challenge: Challenge #6! Do you want everyone to know that you can use the entire Adobe Creative Suite or Microsoft Excel? Endorse a friend for a skill or two and increase your likelihood of receiving an endorsement back! Earn 3 points by commenting on this post once you’ve sent 3 endorsements for a skill. NOTE: All challenges are ongoing so continue to add points for people taking a picture of dropping off LinkedIn summaries. I will continue to manage everything through LinkedIn, but if someone comes into the office please add their points immediately. Thank you :) This weeks challenge:
It is pretty impressive to have valuable work experience listed on your LinkedIn profile, but what is even more impressive is having a well-written account of what you brought to the table at the position. Request a recommendation or two from an employer or professional contact, comment on this post once you’ve sent it and earn 5 points! Also...if people stop by to take a picture or drop off their LinkedIn summary ADD THEIR POINTS right away! Do not wait for Bridget or Kelly to review it. If you have any questions email or text me anytime. Thanks :) Tonya Challenge #4 is out! Woohoo! Here is this week's challenge: Your professional summary on LinkedIn is one of the first things a potential employer’s eyes are drawn to and it may be the only thing they read! Update your summary, can be written in first or third person, and bring it in to the CDC during Quick Counsel from 12-1pm on Fridays to be reviewed (or schedule an appointment) and earn 5 points! Be sure to tell the CDC Specialists to add your points to the challenge. A few reminders:
Also...we are at week 4 out of 7..."ohhhh, ohhh we're half way there....." |
